The Disaster-Resilient Geotechnical and Infrastructure Engineering Program was originally initiated as a Disaster Risk Management Program in the fiscal year 2074/75 under the Faculty of Technology. In its early phase, the program primarily focused on earthquake risk mitigation and the development of early warning systems.
Over time, the program expanded its scope to address a wider range of disasters in Nepal, including landslides in hilly regions, floods, and fire incidents in the Terai. With this broader focus and a stronger emphasis on engineering solutions, the program has been restructured and renamed as the Disaster-Resilient Geotechnical and Infrastructure Engineering Program from the current fiscal year.
The program is established under the faculty to promote research, innovation, and technological advancement in civil and geotechnical engineering. It aims to develop practical, science-based, and sustainable engineering solutions to strengthen disaster resilience in infrastructure systems across Nepal. The program covers key areas of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, bridge engineering and the development of sustainable and innovative construction materials.
Objectives
• Conduct research in geotechnical and infrastructure engineering for disaster risk reduction
• Develop safe, resilient, and sustainable engineering solutions
• Promote advanced construction materials suitable for local conditions
• Support risk-informed infrastructure planning and design
• Strengthen collaboration with national and international institutions on same
Past Activities under Disaster Risk Management Program
• Completed study and initial development of low-cost disaster-resilient building technologies
• Conducted field studies and preliminary mitigation work in landslide-affected areas of the Doti region
• Developed mitigation technique system for floods, landslides, and house fires in terai.
• Conducted research on earthquake risk reduction and early warning systems
Ongoing Activities
• Stability assessment of road-cut slopes in hilly regions
• Soil–structure interaction analysis in tunnel engineering
• Performance evaluation of UHPSC tunnel lining materials
• Landslide susceptibility mapping and monsoon impact analysis using machine learning
• Geotechnical evaluation of cricket pitches
• Research on sustainable concrete using bagasse ash, coconut fiber, and recycled aggregates
• Reinforced earth construction for green and sustainable infrastructure
Collaboration
The program actively seeks collaboration with government agencies, academic institutions, research organizations, and industry stakeholders to strengthen research capacity and ensure the practical implementation of innovative engineering solutions.
