Faculty of Technology is one of the major wings of the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), dedicated to applied research, innovation, and technology development to support Nepal’s national progress. The faculty aims to convert science based on theoretical knowledge into technologies that society on national self-reliance can directly benefit from.

The faculty has a rich background in renewable energy, including work in solar photovoltaic systems, bioenergy production, small hydropower development, and wind-solar resource evaluation throughout the nation. In a breakthrough march for the country, Nepal sent its first nanosatellite in 2019, marking the nation’s foray in space technology development. Yantrika, led by the faculty, the first AI humanoid robot of Nepal, reflected in advanced healthcare assistance prototype, serving up information and technology-driven solutions in a national emergency.

Today, the Faculty has a strong emphasis on research in areas of novelty and potential applications such as nanotechnology, space technology, fuel cell development, advanced materials and simulation-based research, waste-to-energy, disaster risk reduction, and low-cost local technology for sustainable development. The faculty is also driven toward energy economics and energy planning programs to support future energy security and guide policy-level interventions on energy mix and sustainable development.

In addition, the faculty focuses on GPS applications and related programs, sustainable development initiatives in infrastructure, and the preservation and promotion of indigenous technologies across Nepal, which remain central to its mission.

Now we are focusing on the point of prototype development, cross-discipline collaboration, or startup incubation, to motivate and pursue those opportunities and contribute to a vibrant innovation ecosystem. To further empower innovation, faculty is also initiating to setup a Help Desk for Patent Registration and Intellectual Property Support to help the researchers and innovators in securing, managing, and commercializing their technologies in support with Department of Industry, government of Nepal and WIPO. Also in the future, Laboratory for Structural/material Testing and Civil Engineering Applications to enhance the Faculty’s capabilities in the research of infrastructure and construction, as well as several other sophisticated facilities to cater for the burgeoning needs of the nation in technology.
